Software Development

The craft of software after agents: value moves from how to what, the specification becomes a debt, and most code should not exist.

I’ve been making software for twenty years and for most of that time I defended quality against haste. I was right, and today it is no longer enough: agents break the old trade-off between doing it well and doing it fast, and move value from the how to the what and the why. What remains of the craft is the specification, the judgment, the responsibility for what ships. Here I write about things I stopped doing, about specification debt, and about my conviction that most of the software that exists should not exist.
