Ethics

Ethics in software is not a committee: it is a design choice with a cost, and controls that disappear always leave a bill.

I distrust ethics as a conference word. COMPAS, the Amazon recruiter that discarded CVs containing the word women, Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council dissolved in an afternoon are not philosophical dilemmas: they are design choices with a cost, almost always paid by someone else. The ethics that interests me is the kind you can read in the code, in the logs, in who has the power to say no. Here I write about truth as a process, about controls that disappear, about children who are not users.
